I like Big Data and I don’t know why…

I like to wear my “Big Data” t-shirt.   It reads “Data is the new bacon”.   I got this T-shirt from a Big-Data conference in Toronto from the big data company Cloudera.  I often wear this T-shirt as a social experiment because it is one T-shirt that I get stopped often by strangers who will give me their opinion on Big Data.   I have been stopped by at least 50 people from all walks of life, and everyone seems to want to talk about big data.

It’s only when you stop and ask yourself “why?”  that you learn to question what you are doing and how it ties into your personal or organizations strategy.   So today I stopped and asked why?  What did I learn today?  I have learned that the best way to understand the trends in social media is to immerse yourself in digital media and chill with millennials.   One key trend in digital media is Big Data and it could have a big impact on organizations strategies over then next three years.   You need to be careful with “Big Data” as you can get overwhelmed with the numbers, patterns and you need to keep asking “why” you need the data.  What questions are you trying to answer.

I believe that Big Data is going to have a big impact on organizations digital strategies.   Big Data is becoming less and less expensive and the quality of the data can be increasingly more accurate as we are creating new data on a second by second basis, thanks in fact to mobile devices.   These devices are tracking the three components of life, movement, transactions, and needs.   I believe big data is going to be a game changer because when I completed a survey on mega trends for Digital Marketing executives this trend was the top trend.   So to look to the market and find out what the market believes is a trend is the first step.   The next step is to analyze what Big data represents – of course I could use Big Data itself to analyze what the trends are going to be, because after all big data is the analysis of large sets of data to find patterns.   Consumer behaviour and marketing relies on identifying patterns.

So how can one remain relevant, in these times of social media change?   One of the best ways to do so is to keep current on relevant blogs by social media thought leaders.   So the best tools to use would be Social Media Examiner and sprout social’s social media tools for monitor social media.

I am also going to have to change my behaviour by making trend tracking part of my daily routine to monitor what trends are going to change digital media.

So on the day to day processes I have put together my own social media tracking tool, to help me monitor the tools I am using for Social Media.   If you would like to keep on top of social media trends I recommend following the infographic I created below.   I look forward to your input and what you believe is the next big trend in social media.
